I attended an interesting forum discussion, where one of the panel members was Australian dental association CEO Damian Mitsch. One of the many interesting things he talked about was improving efficiency to increase the benefit to vets AND pet owners. This is an alternative to a) vets burning out b) putting our prices up so much that no-one can afford veterinary care. His comments made me excited to be part of the creation of a video series, which aims to demonstrate various procedures to clients. The hope with these videos, is that they will improve efficiency and patient care, and save veterinary practitioner time. My tips for efficiency; - Don't spend hours writing notes for common procedures, discussions, handover and discharge notes. Find a way to save templates. You can save hours here! - Send text updates as well as phone calls. Studies have shown owners are happy with text updates, and they take less time. A combination is obviously required. - Use video content to demonstrate to clients how to care for their pets, for example, 'how to get a pet safely in and out of the car', 'how to collect a urine sample', 'how to care for a closed-suction drain at home', 'performing passive range of motion exercises', 'applying eye drops', 'cleaning eyes', 'caring for a bandage', 'how to care for a patient post abdominal surgery' eg ovariohysterectomy.
