Subcutaneous closure for cat celiotomy

What is quilting? Quilting is where you tack the subcutaneous tissues to the deep fascia/linea. Every 3rd bit is anchored to the deeper layers. This acts to stabilise the tissue layers and reduce dead space.

A 2020 paper (referenced below) revealed that there is a reduced incidence of seromas in cats when you use this pattern to close. They also found that the ABSENCE of a subcutaneous layer increased seroma and pain, and therefore cannot be recommended.

Quilting has also been found to reduce seromas in dogs and man.

This information was taken from the below excellent paper, published in Veterinary Surgery. It investigated 297 cats.

"Effect of subcutaneous closure technique on incisional

complications and postoperative pain in cats undergoing midline

celiotomy: A randomized, blinded, controlled trial" Lopez et al, 2020.
