In my bid to work out how I was going to memorise the mountain of literature and knowledge involved in residency training, I employed a performance psychologist (Helen DeSilver).
Here were a few skills I learned from Helen.
- The best way to remember information is to connect it with something emotive. So try to relate the information back to something that has relevance to you. There is a book called 'Moonwalking with Einstein’ that explains this well and is a good read for anyone studying. Her advise concurred with what I read in this book.
- Smell can be a powerful elicitor of memories.
- While you are reading something, cover (with a blank sheet of paper) the other columns of text or pictures to the side of what you are reading. Our brain is distracted by things in our peripheral vision and this affects our ability to absorb, memorise and recall this information.
