"Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it might change the world for one person". Meet one very special dog, Pepper.
Pepper is extra special as she is owned by a client of 'Pet's in the Park'. Who are 'Pet's in the Park'? They are an incredible charity, run by veterinarians, that care for the pet's of the homeless. Treatment, time and medications are all donated for these special cases. I encourage vets to volunteer for them now and again. Pets and the Park clinics are run 'roadside', so sometimes they need a little help along the way (for example a surgical theatre). Pepper needed a surgical theatre and VSS has a few lovely ones! Pepper had an invasive, malignant tumour that was extending from her elbow all the way down her forelimb. We performed a CT scan and and the tumour had invaded into the deep musculature and was causing Pepper pain and lameness. Fortunately, there was no sign of metastasis (spread) on the CT scan so an amputation was a good option for her. Pepper recovered wonderfully and apparently she is much happier without her painful limb. The owner's message to us was that "Pepper isn't just a pet or a loved animal to me, pepper is my heart. It has shocked me she is so much happier without her leg. You were the angels sent to take care of her when I couldn't. Thank you" A huge thank you also to the team at QML pathology, who helped out with this pro bona case by reading Pepper's histopathology free of charge. Also thank you to the team at Animal Emergency Services for looking after Pepper overnight, also free of charge. We were happy we were able to help in this case and wish Pepper and her owner all the very best.
