Cat appendicular (limb) osteosarcoma - journal club.
There is now a more recent paper (Nakano 2022 JAVMA) that gives us up-to-date information around cats with osteosarcomas of the limbs (appendicular) and scapular.
In summary, the metastatic rate after limb amputation was higher than traditionally reported (40%). Osteosarcoma of the humerus had a higher metastatic rate versus other locations and the overall median survival time in this study of 67 cases, was 527 days.
The take-homes are that post-op imaging at regular intervals is recommended and adjuvant chemotherapy should be considered in light of the high metastatic rate.
