Mindfulness: proven. works. learn it. do it.
How does mindfulness apply to surgeons? In the exact way it applies to everyone - by reducing stress, gaining focus, building resilience and helping you to feel better and less anxious. Mindfulness, by definition, is being present in the moment (versus on autopilot). It is as simple as that. The technique to get there is to notice what is going on around you - what can you feel, hear, see. It takes less than a minute (who has time for meditation and slow yoga - not me!). One of the moments in my day that I really enjoy is discharging patients. This is little Tonka who is 2 months old and had a repair of a capital physeal fracture and comminuted femoral fracture. The owner was ready and waiting to take a photo and captured the moment I love! You can't see it in the photo, but his little tail was wagging, he was warm and soft and the head collar was about to slip out of my arms. Being aware of these things, is mindfulness - EASY! and thanks little Tonka.
