'We would love to have more females involved'.
This was a short phrase, that was articulated by Dr Mark Glyde (AO orthopaedic faculty), at the Advanced AO course I attended in the early days of my residency training. I could tell (due to my experienced 'bs' monitor), that it was a genuine comment and that Dr Glyde truely wanted and valued diversity within a teaching environment and organisation.
I thought to myself at the time, how encouraging the comment felt. Subsequently during my residency, I really focused on trying to understand the AO concepts (as my colleagues will attest to!). So when Dr Lucas Beierer and Dr Chris Tan, who were organising the AO principles course, approached me to see if I would like to be involved as a table demonstrator, I can't remember being more excited and enthusiastic.
Thank you, Dr Mark Glyde. Sometimes it takes just one small comment to inspire a person. I hope that one day, a simple phrase of mine, might also inspire someone to be involved or engaged in honing skills they otherwise thought would not be possible, or pursue a path they couldn't imagine.
And thank-you to the AO faculty for having me - I was so proud to be involved! I had a great time, and hope to increase my learning and involvement with AO in the near future. It is an organisation that will always have my support and dedication.
