Computed Tomography

CT of a canine skull with bullet injuries⁠:⁠

One of the most incredible parts about working in a specialist hospital is the utility of Computed Tomography. The purple dots in this CT are bullets (this dog is absolutely fine, don't worry). ⁠


CT is far more sensitive than radiography in many instances and can be especially useful for identifying lesions that may be missed on radiographs. Radiographs can miss spinal fractures, have limited value for assessing intervertebral disc disease/spinal cord compression and are not as sensitive for the assessment of conditions such as elbow dysplasia or pulmonary metastasis (see link to below article)⁠


CT will likely become much more accessible for general practices as the cost of the set-up becomes cheaper. ⁠
