Checklists can be an EXCELLENT (and scientifically proven) way to help reduce complications in general practice. I always remember getting a highly anxious sensation right before I euthanised a patient in hospital. It is the most unpleasant thing we have to do as vets, but to even contemplate performing this on the incorrect patient is devastating. Why not have a 'euthanasia checklist' with patient name - tick, colour and breed - tick, consent obtained - tick. The same for surgical procedures - 'site confirmed' - tick 'instrumentation confirmed sterile' - tick. Empower your nurses to enforce the checklist for these procedures. Identify key mistakes that have occurred in the past and tailor checklists for these specifically. Have you gone to spey a female, not been able to find the uterus, then checked and realised they actually have testicles i.e. Lucy is in fact Luke, and a checklist could have prevented your error?
Checklists don't have to be fancy. They can be created within 5 minutes in a boring word document then printed, laminated and re-used (using whiteboard marker).
I hope this video helps explain how checklists can help your practices.
