Analgesia for surgical patients: Effective analgesia plans for our surgical patients is crucial. Animals can't tell us they are painful, but they can provide several clues, and we use pain scales to assess their pain levels (based on vocalisation, attention to painful areas, mobility, response to touch and demeanour).
Local analgesia is an easy, safe way to provide effective pain relief for our patients (this patient had a forelimb amputation). For an amputation, you can block every nerve prior to transection, you can do an incisional block and you can place a soaker catheter post-operatively. Lidocaine patches are also available and easy to use. If you are interested in local analgesia, this is an excellent article with all the doses you need. https://todaysveterinarynurse.com/articles/locoregional-anesthesia-for-small-animal-patients/
