A surgical residency with kids

The most common question I get asked about my residency, is how is it possible to do it with kids. My response is that kids are resilient and if they are provided with affection, care and stimulation they will thrive in all sorts of different loving environments.

However, you will still need support to be able to provide these environments. Do you have a very (very) supportive partner, Nanny or family member who understand when you come home at 10pm because you stayed for the late night surgery because it was interesting or you needed it for your case log (or as the residency progresses - because it is your case)?

I supported my husband in his career when the kids were younger and worked part-time for around 4 years (Ashton was 4 and Maddie 3 when I started). We decided as a family that it was my turn to develop my career. And the kids are just fine :)

You can have it all, you just can't have it all at once.
